Charlie Sharzer won First Place in Division 5 (High School Composers) for the first movement of his first string quartet, “The Campaign”
Charlie Sharzer performed his quartet at the State Convention in Riverside on Friday, June 27, 2008, with the help of violinists Jonathan Sun (then a student at UC-San Diego) and Kay Pech and cellist Judy Kang (then a student at USC). Charlie was a viola student in the Pech studio and his composition teacher was Suzanne Wong, MTAC-Whittier Branch. He graduated from Yale University with a double major in Music Composition and Astrophysics in 2012. He now lives in New York City and is a computer consultant for businesses. Charlie continues to perform with an orchestra in the city, as well as compose, winning the “Finalist” prize (recording) in the 2017 Chamber Music Institute Composition Competition. His newest string quartet, “Downtown F” describes the sounds of riding this subway line in NYC, including a bit of salsa and the “breakdown and start up” again. This was recorded in July 2017 by our Faculty Quartet of Leslie Ho, Sarah Wallin Huff, Kay Pech and Judy Kang.
